Our Charity
Why?
The answer is simple; our mission and our charity.
Friends of PICU is a charity dedicated to supporting critically ill children and their families at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Southampton Children’s Hospital. Founded in 2006 by parents of children treated at the PICU and PICU medical staff, the charity aims to provide essential equipment, facilities, and services that are not typically covered by the local health authority2.
What they Do:
Medical Equipment: Donating lifesaving medical equipment to ensure the best possible care for critically ill children.
Facility Improvements: Enhancing the PICU environment to create a more comforting and supportive space for patients and their families.
Family Support: Offering emotional and practical support to families during their most challenging times.
Education and Training: Providing training for medical staff to ensure they are equipped with the latest knowledge and skills
Alex’s story
On July 5th, 2024, Charlie came into the world at the Princess Anne hospital in Southampton and had 2 weeks of cuddles and care with Becca and Alex in the neonatal intensive care unit before his first of three operations to give him a chance at life.
Before he was born, Charlie was diagnosed with a condition called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome which is a rare congenital heart disease.
After his first operation at exactly 2 weeks old in Southampton General Hospital, Charlie went to stay on the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). After a few hours he went into cardiac arrest and received CPR from a fantastic team of Doctors and nurses. He then went on to life support (ECMO). Whilst on the ward he has received many procedures that have ensured he carries on his journey to recovery. None of this would be possible without the expertise, dedication and support of the team and life saving equipment.
The unit relies on donations from Friends of PICU to fund much of their equipment used on the ward. They also fund ambulances and the support for families-which is incredibly important whilst spending time on the ward.
